I can display the file with all mentioned utilities and I can print it
on a non-PostScript LaserJet 1022 (ffo2zjs driver). If I print it ("lpr
-P <printer> <file>") on an HP LaserJet 4050 PostScript printer with the
manufacturer-supplied PPD file (linuxprinting.org-ppds package) the
printer prints only a page with a PostScript error message.

Which printer model do you have? Have you already tried to print on
another printer?

Can you edit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf, setting "LogLevel" to "debug", then
restart CUPS ("sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart") and try to print again?
When the job disappears from the queue ("lpstat -o" or printer symbol in
the system tray disappearing) copy the /var/log/cups/error_log file
immediately and attach it to this bug report.
