I was incorrect in my original message, it does load the gdm, but it fails to load the gnome display (most likely due to an error because of some function called by compiz which causes the graphics driver to crash).
** Attachment added: "Output of lspci -vvnn" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/19636257/lspci%20-vvnn ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel My laptop uses the Intel 945GM graphics card and while under Hardy and the "i810" driver it worked flawlessly, the Intrepid install has made a large regression. When I first installed 8.10, it set my Xorg video driver to "vesa" instead of "intel". Under "vesa" I could not get graphics acceleration. After manually switching it to "intel" it would - not load the gdm and after I logged in it would crash and take me back - to the login screen. By reading around, I found that some were able to - fix this problem when they removed "compiz" and "compiz-core" or + not load the gnome display and after I logged in it would crash and take + me back to the login screen. By reading around, I found that some were + able to fix this problem when they removed "compiz" and "compiz-core" or disabled them completely. That worked for me, but it is an inconvenience. Also, when the driver is loaded before the login screen, it changes different shades of blackness for about 2 seconds before loading the login screen, where in Hardy under the "i810" driver it did not do so. With "compiz" removed, I am able to get acceleration (as can be seen by successfully playing "openarena"), yet the lack of "compiz" is a major setback for the upgrade, which overall went smoothly. -- Intel 945GM Fails with Intel Driver when Compiz is Enabled https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/297449 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
