My apologies for not getting back to you earlier --- I was out of
town.  The fix noted in 278471 did not work for me.  However, the
"killall krunner" fix worked perfectly.  I'd also like to share some
additional information that may prove helpful in debugging this issue.
 I noticed that when I attempted to restart krunner (after applying
the killall command) I received the following output from the terminal

sudo krunner
Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-ubuntu" is owned by uid 999 instead of uid 0.
Error: "/tmp/kde-ubuntu" is owned by uid 999 instead of uid 0.
