Following the suggestion made by Gareth Bult (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg- server/+bug/259808/comments/26) I stopped experiencing hard lock-ups with my network updated intrepid, OS ati driver with desktop effects activated in kwin.
