I am still having the problem even after the ifconfig down. I notice that if I 
do "sudo ifconfig eth1 down" in the terminal that will only shut down the 
wireless for a few seconds and then it comes back online. (The wireless LED 
proves this). During the actual shutdown the duration is even shorter.
There is also a strange thing going on whereas if I don't have my nVidia 
restricted driver installed the problem will not occur. I'm not sure if they 
are related.
