I can confirm that his bug is in a 8.10 desktop 32 bit VMware VM (on-
line upgraded from 8.04 today) along with a 8.10 desktop 64bit VM that
was installed from the official release CD a few days ago (with all
current upgrade packages).

The VMWare environment should indicate that particular hardware
combinations are not the issue.

I also found that if you can kill the amixer process then the shutdown
continues as normal.
