I'm having this problem after upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10 same symptoms, no audio icon (and can't add it), re-installed compiz and gnome and still nothing, I get this "old-look" windows and that error message when opening the theme settings (and even if I change them, the colors change a bit, but not the theme or icons).
I tried with safe gnome, same problem.
