bhmb, Just to clarify what I did: 1) Downgraded libsane back to the 1.0.18-3ubuntu1 version 2) Commented SUBSYSTEM!="usb_device", GOTO="libsane_rules_end" as Miguel suggested (this did improve the situation as the scanner was now recognized by scanimage -L).
But now... very curious, I found out that I had downloaded (a long time ago) "kooka" a scanning program from KDE. And guess what.... it works. Which is curious to me because it says it uses "sane", probably in a different way that scanimage uses "sane".
