I just had installed linux-backports-modules-hardy-386 by mistake, this pulled down the corresponding -386 kernel where there is no snd-hda- intel support (wonder why but don't really want to know). However the bug remains in the mainline kernel, that iwl3945 is unsupported and this is a regression from gutsy. This bug should perhaps be reassigned to the main kernel.
