The reason why there are so many duplicates is because this issue is not just related to burning. Here is a simple run down.
In some configurations :- Hardy 8.04 LTS will 1) Fail to recognize any DVDs DVD-r etc. and will only read CD-Roms no burning on either CD or DVD or 2) Fail to recongize only CD-ROMs and Burn to CD-ROMs only. Not DVDs. or 3) Fail to recognize DVDs but no blanks or 4) fail to recognize DVD media burned in Gutsy.
