TLE and Christian, it's a known bug that ati does not load the appropriate module on X600/X800 cards, bug #28925.
Christian, that choosing radeon helped for you, might be a side effect (another known "feature") that when specifying radeon instead of letting ati load it, DRI will be disabled. Check your Xorg.0.log to verify this. Very interesting that your card magically got fixed.
