I had some time around a hotspot today to do some testing. I was able to connect to the AP, get an IP assigned and talk to the DNS (I didn't get further than that due to time constrains and me being relatively inexperienced in terms of routing tables and whatnot, also firestarter/iptables probably blocked attempts to fetch webpages). This was done using the ath5k module. I tested this with the madwifi driver too and got the same results. I'll be around another hotspot during the weekend with more time for testing, so if you want me to do more testing let me know.
