With crashes, the next step is to obtain a full backtrace.  See
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for directions.  You'll want to
install -dbg packages for Xorg and your video driver.

It's unusual that Xorg.0.log wouldn't be generated.  You might also try
looking for an error in your gdm log in /var/log/gdm/, or alternatively
shut down gdm and try starting X with 'startx', to see if there are
errors emitted to stdout/stderr.  But really, the backtrace is going to
be the best thing for making progress on troubleshooting this.
