Hi All, I can also confirm that the one line patch to alps.c solves the problem. gsynaptics still complains that it couldn't initialize, and that SHMConfig must be true, but scrolling works anyway. Also I do have SHMConfig on in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
It is so nice having scrolling back. In fact it was worth the long wait to compile the kernel.
