I opened a similar ticket and closed it a few minutes ago, because in my case there is no default gateway set on my system (since the vpn server is in the same network as the client).
But if you have a default route, redirect-gateway should work! Do you have a default gateway? Have you tried openvpn without NM - still happening then? I'll do some tests as soon as I get home...
