The following isn't a fix, but does workaround the problem of hal not being updated correctly.
This became an issue for me when another package had a requirement on a later version of hal than I was using. The problem with HAL complaining about failure to install happened every time an update occurred (using synaptic). As HAL is closely connected with the GNOME user interface, the solution is to install without HAL or X running. You therefore need to go to a login prompt (using e.g. CTRL-ALT-F1). Login and kill off all X related stuff: I think the following should do: $ sudo killall gdm Then use aptitude to update your system. In my case aptitude recognised that HAL was only partially installed and completed the installation. Once HAL is updated you can restart the GUI using $ sudo gdm After that, the system appears to be ok once more. -- package hal 0.5.11~rc2-1ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/206634 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
