I am having the same trouble. You say FF will not work over NFS when you do not already have a working profile. Well, this could be a different way of expressing the fact that Firefox 3 won't work when /home is exported over NFS and the system experiences a cold shutdown. The latter scenario gives me a Firefox with no Bookmarks Toolbar and no Back/Forward buttons. It's 100% reproducible. Note that I first still need to remove the profile locks (lock and .parentlock files). That is another issue.
