Here we go.... Clean install Breezy --> dist-upgrade to Dapper via distribution CD --> updated packages via synaptic --> removed quiet splash options + ybin -v --> removed old Dapper distribution kernel + using SpaceBunny's cue, i set the old Breezy kernel for old.
This time starting the machine did actually prevent the splash from coming up (obviously the problems i had encountered earlier were to do with the ybin errors). The last couple of lines showing up now are: hdb: cache flushes supported hdb: [mac] hdb1 hdb2 hdb3 hdb4 hdb5 hdb6 After the last line, there doesn't appear to be any more activity. Booting using the old Breezy kernel gets to me to the desktop, however i seem to be sans ppp0 connection. I've tried taking a look at wvdial, but don't seem to be having much luck with that, but will persist. Logging out and back in again seems to present a different subset of problems - i can open the trash and right-click on the desktop, but nothing else. I hope this helps.
