Hi Everyone,
I mentioned to a people in #ubuntu-au a few days ago that I was
contacted by someone asking if we (as in the Ubuntu-AU Loco Team) would
be able to approach the ASCCA [1] to promote Ubuntu.

I have shared a few emails back & forth asking for suggestions & further
information (see below for the email exchange). I was also informed that
there was a presentation on Linux at an ASCCA conference "many years
ago", but nothing outlining the many advantages that Ubuntu has to offer.

I have looked through the available information that ASCCA has on their
website detailing previous conferences [2] & [3] and it seems like their
are some "major players" presenting at these conferences.

I would like to get some feedback from everyone within the Ubuntu-AU
Loco Team to find out if we (as a Loco Team) would be able to give a
presentation at the ASCCA 2010 conference.

I believe that it would go a long way into helping to promote Ubuntu to
a very large audience within Australia. However, I am unsure if we (as a
Loco Team) are ready to try for something on such a grand scale at this
time.

Please let me know what you think. I am interested in any & all feedback
so that we can collectively make a decision to proceed with this or not.

P.S. Please note that I have removed the name & email address of the
person who contacted me directly as I did not obtain permission to pass
on their personal details.

Kind Regards,

Hi Mitch,

I am a Ubuntu user and a few more residents in our retirement village
will be loading Lucid when it arrives. I would like to see your
Sydney Loco approach ASCCA (Australian Seniors Computer Club
Association) to promote Ubuntu. ASCCA is an umbrella association for
some 140 clubs round the country and these clubs represent about
40,000 members.  Contact details are;

Hi [NAME REMOVED],
I was not aware that an organisation such as ASCCA existed. I
believe that it is something we should definitely look into further to
promote Ubuntu.

I am wondering if you are a representative of ASCCA, or a member of one
of their clubs? What type of promoting do you believe may be effective
for us to use when approaching this organisation? Do you think that they
would like someone to come around & offer a demonstration, offer some
help/ guidance? Do you think that they would want something more than
that, more like a team of people to organise something more akin to an
install-fest or perhaps even something entirely different?

I believe that seniors clubs would be a great place for the Ubuntu
community to help out. To use a personal example, I am currently in the
process of setting up a computer for a relative (who would classify as a
senior) as she is continually being infected by computer viruses & other
such "nasties". As you would know from being a fellow Ubuntu user, using
Ubuntu really does help to prevent these kinds of issues.

As a senior (without trying to stereotype) she mostly uses her computer
for email, facebook, photo-sharing, youtube, chat, etc. (and the odd
game of solitaire, mah-jong, etc.). I believe that Ubuntu as an
operating system excels in these areas.

What type of activities are you & other residents at your retirement
village using Ubuntu for? I would really like some more insight from
someone such as yourself to help me to further understand what other
activities seniors are interested in.

Thank you for contacting me in relation to this matter. After I have
gathered further information & have a better insight into what we could
do, I intend to put this idea to the Ubuntu-AU Loco Team via the mailing
list to try & get the ball rolling.

Also, currently I (along with some other Sydney based members of the
Ubuntu-AU Loco) are discussing the idea of a release party (as you would
more than likely be aware of as you replied to my initial email). Do you
think that anyone from your retirement village would be interested in
attending if we do go ahead with this? We are still in the *very* early
stages of planning & nothing has been finalised as yet.

Thank you once again for contacting me. I believe that this is exactly
the type of thing that the Ubuntu-AU Loco Team should try to help out
with. I look forward to your reply.

Kind Regards,
Mitch Towner.

Hi Mitch,

Our club is a member of ASCCA, it is an association of clubs, not
individuals. If you google ASCCA there is a lot of information on
their web page. Every year they have a conference which is held at
the Power House Museum in Sydney and I think an Ubuntu presentation
there would be a great way to promote Ubuntu Linux and this year we
will have the LTS version which is a plus. This years conference will
be on the 8th & 9th of September. There are copies of some of last
years presentations on the website which give a good idea of what it
is all about.

Our seniors have similar interests to your relative. One of the
reasons I want to promote Ubuntu here is because many of them waste
money on new equipment and software which is expensive and requires
even more spending later on, on upgrades.

Regarding the release party, we are located on the Gold Coast so that
would be difficult and at the moment I am the only Ubuntu user here
although we have several members who plan to load Intrepid Ipex when
it is released.

I hope this snippet of information is helpful, let me know if you need
anything else.

Regards,

Mitch,

Since my previous email I have learned that ASCCA had a presentation
on Linux many years ago, however they are probably not aware of the
great advances that have been made with Ubuntu.
