The Computer Science department is looking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research
Fellow to support the work of Prof. Jacqueline Christmas. This UK Hydrographic
Office funded post is available immediately, for a period of one year. The
ideal candidate for this post is likely to be have a background in computer
science, applied mathematics, oceanography or ocean engineering. Strong,
proven skills in programming and software engineering will be required as we
will be creating complex simulations of a natural environment.

In this project we will define and develop a maritime digital twin from which
we will generate physically realistic simulations of waves on the sea's surface
over time, and to do so at the resolution required to support a ship or boat
motion simulator. We will start by looking at linear swell waves, but intend
to incorporate wind and tidal flow effects as well, and, eventually, non-linear
waves. We will be undertaking the development for a specific UK coastal area,
but the design of the digital twin will support the definition of any sea area.

The European Space Agency's Sentinel-1 satellite captures snapshots of surface
waves using synthetic aperture radar. These data will be processed into a
localised wave climate, which will be included in the digital twin. This wave
climate will be used to generate driving wave systems in simulations and to
evaluate the realism of the simulations.

This project is being undertaken for, and in collaboration with, the UK's
Hydrographic Office (UKHO). UKHO is a world-leading centre for hydrography,
specialising in marine geospatial data to support safe, secure and thriving
oceans, and they will be providing bathymetry data on which the digital twin
will be based. For candidates able to pass basic UK security vetting, they
offer the chance to spend some of the time working at their site in Taunton,
Somerset.
