Applications are invited for a post-doctoral position in probabilistic machine
learning for microbial genome recovery and exploration, Aalborg University,
Denmark

As a post-doctoral researcher you will develop probabilistic machine learning
models and algorithms for representation learning and exploration of large
heterogeneous data sets, covering sequenced microbial DNA fragments as well as
auxiliary data sources on relevant environmental factors.

You will be part of an exciting, cross-disciplinary and collaborative project,
focusing on developing methods for improving our understanding of the microbial
communities in our environments. These communities play a vital role in most
processes in the biosphere and are essential for solving present and future
environmental challenges. In the project, you will be involved in uncovering
and exploring how environmental factors influence microbial genome diversity as
well as improving the recovery rate of microbial genomes from complex microbial
communities.

The position is part of the VILLUM Synergy project "Illuminating microbial dark
matter through data science" and you will be affiliated with the Department of
Computer Science at Aalborg University (AAU), Denmark. The project is
inherently cross-disciplinary and you will work closely with researchers from
bioscience (http://albertsenlab.org/) and be involved in joint PhD
supervisions. The project is a follow-up project on the Data Science meets
Microbial Dark Matter project (https://darkmatter.aau.dk/).

The postdoc position is initially for one year, with the possibility of an
extension for up to 3 years based on mutual agreement.

Requirements:
-------------------
    * PhD in computer science, data science, or a related field
    * Excellent communication skills in English, oral as well as written
    * Good programming skills
    * Publication record in peer-reviewed conferences and journals
    * Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others
    * Experiences in (probabilistic) machine learning, ideally generative
models and Bayesian machine learning.

Responsibilities:
----------------------
    * Perform excellent scientific research
    * Develop research prototypes and conduct experiments
    * Publish in international conferences and journals
    * Participate in activities of the group, the project, and the department
    * Co-supervision of PhD students

About Aalborg University
----------------------------------
The Computer Science Department at Aalborg University takes a leading
international position within data management and verification. It is a very
young university (1974) but with a strong international profile in Mathematics,
Computer Science & Engineering, also hosting the two most highly cited Computer
Scientists of the country. According to the most recent US News and World
Ranking, Aalborg University ranks 4th in the world within the field of
Engineering. According to a 2018 MIT report, Aalborg University is considered
to have the 4th best engineering program in the world.

About Aalborg:
--------------------
Aalborg is a lively city with numerous cultural attractions. The area features
relatively low cost of living, clean air, beautiful forests and beaches, and
very good transportation infrastructure. A recent report on European cities
ranks Aalborg highest:
