The annual ACM Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (ACM IUI) is a
premiere venue for discussion and dissemination of research on the design,
development, and evaluation of human-oriented AI systems, that is, systems
that people directly interact with and that incorporate some aspects of
machine intelligence. Specific examples of such systems include perceptual
user interfaces, intelligent assistants, conversational agents, adaptive
systems, and more. Creating successful systems of this kind requires
solving numerous interaction design and computational challenges and
necessarily requires a multidisciplinary approach. ACM IUI supports this
multidisciplinary approach to research and innovation by bringing together
researchers and practitioners from the fields of Human-Computer Interaction
(HCI), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and many others.

ACM IUI is particularly known for disseminating research that combines
computational innovation, novel interaction design, and empirical evidence
that demonstrate the resulting solution is valuable to people. However, ACM
IUI also welcomes a broad range of contributions including algorithms,
computational modelling approaches, enabling technologies, critical
perspectives, behavioral and user studies, novel methodologies, data sets,
etc. Contributions are expected to be supported by rigorous evidence
appropriate to the claims (e.g., a user study, system evaluation,
computational analysis). Contributions are welcome from all relevant
arenas—academia, industry, government, and non-profit organizations. The
conference is large enough to be diverse and lively, but small enough to
allow for extensive interaction among attendees and easy attendance to the
events that the conference offers, ranging from oral paper presentations,
to poster sessions, interactive demonstrations, workshops, panels, and a
doctoral consortium for graduate students.

***** Topics *****

IUI topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Human-oriented AI methods and approaches
e.g., explainable AI methods (e.g., transparency and interpretability),
persuasive technologies in IUI, privacy and security of IUI, planning and
plan recognition for IUI, knowledge-based approaches to user interface
design and generation, user modelling for intelligent interfaces,
user-adaptive interaction and personalization, crowd computing and human
computation, human-centred design.

- Computational innovation
e.g., modelling approaches, machine learning methods, human-in-the loop
machine learning, and interactive machine learning.

- Interface types and modalities
e.g., affective and aesthetic interfaces, collaborative interfaces,
speech-based interfaces, AR/VR interfaces, intelligent wearable and mobile
interfaces, ubiquitous smart environments, embodied agents, virtual
assistants, multi-modal interfaces, conversational interfaces, tangible
interfaces, intelligent visualization.

- Evaluations of intelligent user interfaces
e.g., user experiments and studies, reproducibility (including benchmarks,
datasets, and challenges), meta-analysis, mixed-methods evaluations.

- Application areas of IUI
e.g., education and learning-related technologies, health and intelligent
health technologies, assistive technologies, social media and other Web
technologies, mobile applications, intelligent assistants, conversational
agents, Information retrieval, search, and recommendation system, internet
of things (IoT).

***** Papers *****

We invite original paper submissions that are not under consideration
elsewhere. This year, there is no page limit on the papers (however, we
encourage authors to not exceed 10,000 words) and no formal distinction
between long and short papers; instead, we expect that the paper length
should be commensurate with the contributions. All materials must be
submitted electronically to PCS 2.0
http://new.precisionconference.com/~sigchi by the abstract and paper
deadline. For more detailed submission instructions please visit
https://iui.acm.org/2022.

Accepted papers will appear in the ACM Digital Library and citation
indices. A selected set of accepted top quality full papers will be invited
to submit their extended versions for publication in an ACM Transactions on
Interactive Intelligent Systems (TiiS, https://tiis.acm.org) special issue
titled "Highlights of IUI 2022".

Accepted papers will be invited for oral presentation.

***** Major Changes This Year *****

- No page limit
- No separation between long and short papers
- Authors are encouraged to reflect on the societal impact of their work
- Introduction of an authors’ rebuttal after initial reviews are released
