Computer Scientists, Data Scientists, and Social and Survey Scientists!
Following a very successful conference in Barcelona, Spain, in 2018, BigSurv
returns in Utrecht, The Netherlands in 2020.
The second international conference on Big Data Meets Survey Science
(BigSurv20) is currently accepting abstracts and session proposals
<https://www.bigsurv20.org/abstracts> on the theme, “Continuing to Explore New
Statistical Frontiers at the Intersection of Big Data and Survey Science.” The
call for abstracts and session proposals closes on February 13, 2020.
BigSurv20 Overview: BigSurv20 will be held November 4-6, 2020, at Utrecht
University, in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The conference offers an opportunity
to address the ongoing paradigm shift in how researchers produce, analyze, and
use statistics. The event is intended to foster communication, collaboration,
and understanding between two groups: (1) computer and data scientists focusing
on Big Data sources and analysis techniques, and (2) methodologists and social
science researchers working with traditional sources of data collection and
statistical analyses. By uniting efforts, we can identify and overcome academic
divides and make unified “Big Survey Data” population inference a reality.
Utrecht is located a convenient 25-minute train ride from Amsterdam airport,
and has excellent train connections to the rest of Europe.
Abstract Information: To be considered for the conference, presentations and
papers should be broad and forward-looking; they may be original research or
syntheses of the state of the art. The conference is organized along 12
presentation tracks and includes three presentation formats:
Papers,
Posters, and
Software demos.
The abstract submission form asks for author contact information, presentation
format, presentation track, and an abstract of no more than 500 words.
Additional information on the presentation formats and tracks can be found on
the BigSurv20 website at https://www.bigsurv20.org/abstracts
<https://www.bigsurv20.org/abstracts>.
Session Proposal Information: In addition to individual abstract submissions,
we encourage session proposal submissions. Each session should consist of 4 to
5 papers. When submitting your session, you will need to provide a brief
session description (150 words or fewer) and submit individual abstracts for
each session paper. Additional information on the session proposals can be
found on the BigSurv20 website at https://www.bigsurv20.org/abstracts
<https://www.bigsurv20.org/abstracts>.
Publication Outlets: To promote the research presented at BigSurv20 while
accommodating differences in publication objectives and cultures across
disciplines, papers will be eligible for consideration in one of two selected
publication outlets according to the conference’s two publication tracks:
computer/data science and social science. Additional information on the
publication outlets will be released in the coming months.
Student Paper Award and Early Career Scholar Travel Award: The BigSurv20
Scientific Committee is interested in supporting conference attendance by
undergraduate students, graduate students, and early career scholars. BigSurv20
award opportunities include two student paper awards (students or recent
2019/2020 graduates) and early career scholar travel awards (graduate students
or 2015-2020 graduates). The student paper awards include a monetary award and
a conference travel stipend. The early career scholar travel awards include a
travel stipend; students and early career scholars from underrepresented
regions are encouraged to apply to this award. Additional information on the
award application process will be released in the coming weeks.
Big Data Challenge: This year we are partnering with Statistics Netherlands.
The 2020 edition of our Big Data Challenge will ask conference attendees to
submit challenge proposals beforehand from which a subset will be selected by
the scientific committee. Curious? We’ll soon be sharing more information on
our website and via email.
BigSurv18 Reflections: If you are not familiar with the BigSurv conference and
are interested in learning more, the full program with presentations from
BigSurv18 is available on the BigSurv18 website <https://www.bigsurv18.org/>.
Also, we encourage you to review the summaries of BigSurv18 in Survey Research

submissions can be directed to Antje Kirchner (akirch...@rti.org
