NLE's applied artificial intelligence group and the MPI-AGE bioinformatics group combine multiple modalities of data, including high-throughput 'omics data, imaging, demographics, traditional genetic screens, and medical history, to make biologically-interesting and clinically-relevant predictions. We are currently looking for students to carry out a shared internships at our premises in Cologne and Heidelberg, Germany. The focus will be on applying and extending our state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms on high-throughput sequencing data, as well as other data modalities.
The internship may include the following work items: - Developing insights in ageing related diseases, immunotherapy, and biochemistry - Identifying and curating publicly available data sets as well as proprietary data sets - Extending existing algorithms to handle new types of data, such as next generation sequencing (NGS) data - Evaluating algorithms on real-world biomedical and clinical datasets - Developing interpretable machine learning algorithms for biomedical research Required Skills: - Familiarity with bioinformatics - Hands-on experience with Python - Familiarity with machine learning frameworks, such as scikit-learn, Keras, or PyTorch - Good English communication skills Benefits: - Early exposure to modern data science approaches to biomedical problems - Excellent opportunities to obtain experience in an industrial research environment - Highly dynamic international research atmosphere in one of Germany's biggest research societies - Opportunity to publish papers in international conferences and journals - Competitive compensation Duration: 3-6 months Starting date: February 2020 (flexible) The successful applicant will be jointly selected by the MPI-AGE and NLE and two independent contracts made for each respective period.
