Project Description
Applications are invited for a 3.5-year ETP PhD studentship to conduct an 
experimental study using both Artificial Neural Network (ANN) modelling and 
mock-up testing. We will examine the effect of environmental fluctuations in a 
room on the microclimate inside a number of typical storage and display cases 
for book and paper collections. Our aim is to establish an acceptable level of 
fluctuation that would allow us to loosen current tight environmental controls 
and therefore reduce energy consumption.

The successful candidate will be jointly supervised by academics in Heriot-Watt 
and Strathclyde and industrial advisors in The National Library of Scotland to 
gain both valuable research and industry work experience which will widen and 
enhance future job prospects. The candidate will join the Urban Energy Research 
Group based at the CESBD which comprises of academics, research associates and 
PhD students of multi-disciplinary fields. The candidate is expected to join 
the research activities of the group, producing written reports to sponsors and 
papers for international publication.

The Institute of Sustainable Building Design at Heriot-Watt University is a 
Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design (CESBD) established by the 
Royal Academy of Engineering. As one of four such Centres in UK, we join the 
national network to demonstrate and exchange best practice in teaching and 
research for the sustainable built environment. We undertake fundamental and 
applied research with an overall objective to ensure that buildings, 
infrastructure, public spaces and places are buildable, fit for purpose, 
resource efficient, sustainable, resilient, adaptable and attractive.

Applicants must have a minimum of an upper second-class BSc degree in physics 
or engineering and preferably a Master’s degree in a relevant engineering or 
scientific subject.

Essential skills should include:-
- a good understanding of heat/mass transfer
- good programming (e.g. C, Java, Python)
- the ability to prioritise and work to deadlines
- good planning and organisational skills

Desirable skills should include:-
- an appreciation of the ways in which Artificial Intelligence technology can 
be used in the monitoring and control of indoor environments
- the ability to evaluate situations and problem solve
- a creative approach to delivering results
- good technical writing and verbal communication skills

This studentship is jointly funded by an alliance between Scottish 
Universities, Scottish Funding Council, and the National Library of Scotland. 
It is part of The Energy Technology Partnership (ETP), aiming “to build on the 
existing areas of excellence and collaborative working to ensure that Scotland 
remains, into the future, a world-renowned source for energy related RD&D and 
its commercialisation in the energy sector”.
Funding Notes
The scholarship will cover tuition fees for Home/EU students (£4327 per annum). 
Overseas students wishing to apply will be required to pay the difference 
between this amount and the full international fee (£14,940 per annum) for the 
PhD in Construction. The scholarship will also provide an annual stipend of 
approximately £15,009 for the 3.5 years duration of the project.
