The Visual Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at Oxford Brookes University,
led by Professor Fabio Cuzzolin, is seeking two postdoctoral researchers in
deep learning for computer vision in surgical robotics, to be appointed as
soon as possible, on a contract ending Dec 31 2020.

The deadline for application is August 20 2019.

The Visual Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (
http://cms.brookes.ac.uk/staff/FabioCuzzolin/) has established itself as
one of the top research groups in the world in deep learning for action
detection, conducting work at the current boundaries of human action
recognition. Our algorithms hold the best detection accuracies to date, and
the team designed in 2017 the first system yet able to localise multiple
actions on the image plane in (better than) real time (52fps) on a single
GPU. Our work has won several awards in recent years. Former PhD students
have moved on to postdoc positions at Oxford, Stanford and ETH Zurich.

The Lab’s is currently running on a budget of around £1.6 million, with
seven live funded projects spanning computer vision, machine learning,
autonomous driving, surgical and mobile robotics, AI for healthcare,
decision making and uncertainty theory. For an overview of our research
themes and projects, please consult

You will join a vibrant and fast growing team projected to comprise 20-25
people in 2019-20. You will be working on a network of cutting edge 4-GPU
and 8-GPU workstations. The group collaborates with various companies
including Huawei, Leonardo, Cisco, Ocado, Cortexica and Amazon, and is in
the process of spinning off a company in the area of action detection. We
closely work with Cambridge University’s Neuroscience Department, as well
as Oxford University’s Engineering and Computer Science Departments, and
have established links with IIT Bombay, Harvard, Seoul National, the
Fraunhofer Institute, and numerous other European partners.

For our most recent relevant publications on PAMI, IJCV, BMVC and ICCV
please see: http://cms.brookes.ac.uk/staff/FabioCuzzolin/pubs.html

The postdocs will work as part of the Horizon 2020 SARAS project, Smart
Autonomous Robotic Assistant Surgeon (http://saras-project.eu/), of which
Prof Cuzzolin is overall Science Officer. The Lab is in charge of the
cognition and perception components of SARAS, including: video scene
understanding, object detection and tracking, tracking of deformable
surfaces, online surgeon action detection, anomaly detection, all from the
streaming videos coming from the endoscope in robotic laparoscopic
procedures.

You are encouraged to contact Prof Cuzzolin at fabio.cuzzo...@brookes.ac.uk
for more information and an informal feedback on your application.
