In Middle Ages was ruled Longobards, Normans, Byzantines and for a short period of 20 years, Bari was the centre of the Emirate of Bari; the city was sacked and razed to the ground, and the fortress of Baris destroyed several times and then it recovered. Included in the Kingdom of Naples, in the 1800s the city was under the rule of Napoleon's brother-in-law, Joachim Murat, who, as King of Naples, built a new section of the city, now bearing the name of the Borgo Murattiano, which is a great place to spend time, with a major shopping district and gorgeous architectures built in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
