Applications are invited for a fixed term, fully-funded PhD studentship
at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki, Finland. The selected student will receive well-supervised PhD training in a world-class research environment on the topics of probabilistic inference, machine learning and data analysis. The starting date is flexible, and can be anything from May 1st to September 1st 2008. Specifically, the student will be working with Dr. Patrik Hoyer on developing and testing methods for causal inference from non- experimental data. Such methods are important in a wide variety of disciplines including bioinformatics, economics and social science, in which it is often not feasible to perform randomized controlled experiments. The methodological framework combines theory from statistics and machine learning, but the project nevertheless has a very pragmatic goal: to develop methods that work well in practice. Applications from candidates with a master's degree (or equivalent) in a relevant quantitative topic such as, for instance, computer science, statistics, or econometrics are welcome. A strong command of English and basic programming skills (any programming language) are essential. The salary for a doctoral student is based on levels 1 - 3 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel. With the salary component based on personal work performance the overall salary range is 1 729 – 2 143 euro per month. There is no tuition fee at the university. For further information, please contact Dr. Patrik Hoyer, +358 9 191 51250, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Applications with full contact information, a brief (one-page) statement of research interests, CV and a transcript of studies (including courses and grades) should be sent to Dr. Patrik Hoyer, [EMAIL PROTECTED] All applications received no later than April 15th 2008 will receive equal and full consideration. Finland has a high standard of living and a well-developed democratic welfare state, has been a member of the EU since 1995, and consistently ranks at or near the top in various international comparisons of national performance.
