Call for Papers

Special Issue of the Journal of Biomedical Informatics on
Computerized Decision Support for Critical and Emergency Care

Guest Editors:
Dominik Aronsky, MD PhD, Tze-Yun Leong, PhD, and Michael M. Shabot, MD

Submission deadline: April 30, 2007

The critical and emergency care environments are complex, fast-paced,
and information intensive settings. The information management tasks,
decision analytic problems, and user acceptance challenges differ from
other settings and require special methods for developing applications
that support effective delivery and ensure high quality of patient care.

The goal of this special issue of the Journal of Biomedical Informatics
is to provide a forum for advanced research on new methods for
computerized decision support in fast-paced clinical environments. In
accordance with the editorial policies of the Journal, we are soliciting
full-length article submissions that present and evaluate new methods
rather than the application of existing approaches (see editorial
guidelines at http://www.elsevier.com/locate/yjbin). In addition to
original research papers, we are soliciting one or more methodological
review papers in the issue and we welcome submissions in this category.

Possible topics for this special issue include, but are not limited to:

* Theoretical and applied decision support methodologies in complex,
fast-paced settings
* Machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques for
representing, inferencing, and learning in resource-critical settings
* Design, development, and evaluation strategies for decision support
systems
* Guideline-driven and evidence-based approaches for cost-effective care
* Information integration and management from various sources
* Intelligent data visualization
* Intelligent interfaces for human-computer interaction
* Cognitive aspects of decision support in information-intensive settings
* Decision support to improve communication and the sharing of information

Any questions regarding the special issue may be sent to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Inquiries about suitability should
include a short paragraph describing the primary objectives of the
manuscript. We would welcome advance notice of your intention to submit
a paper; simply send an email message to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Submissions: Manuscripts should be submitted to the JBI authors’ gateway
(http://ees.elsevier.com/jbi/) no later than April 30, 2007. Please be
sure that your manuscript follows the JBI instructions for authors
available on that web site. You will be offered an opportunity to
specify the special issue as the preferred venue when you submit your
manuscript to the gateway. Submissions will undergo standard peer
review, and opportunities for revision will be provided as appropriate.
Papers judged inappropriate for the special issue may be considered for
publication in a regular issue of the Journal of Biomedical Informatics.
