That sort of authentication was only needed for old mail applications
that did not allow SMTP login details to be specified.  Authentication
was only added to my current email application Ameol2 about five years
ago, but it was 10 years old even then (although had moved from 16-bit to
32-bits.  

I can not imagine an SMTP server that only supports POP3 authentication
without accepting SMTP authentication as well.  Such a server would be so
old it would be a prime target for hacking.
