Honorable mention for producing the short lived “The Adventures of Mark and Brian” which, though a ratings failure, helped to establish the template for what would become “reality” television.
My only interaction with the man occurred during rehearsal of the Emmy awards. He was standing atop the foot of the stage of the Shrine Auditorium. Mischer, who was producing the show, was lamenting the fact the dress rehearsal for the three hour broadcast was well into its eighth hour. I was walking in front of the front row, probably delivering papers or something equally useless, and — being the sarcastic loud mouth that I am — remarked “the good news is this neverending telethon has raised a million dollars for Jerry’s Kids”. “OK smart ass,” he replied, “what would you cut to make it shorter?” I replied “I’d cut the awards.” This made him laugh quite a bit, then he told me to walk away… to walk far away. Later I would be told that nobody talked to him the way I did, and I was lucky to get out alive. Full disclosure: I cribbed the line about Jerry’s Kids from Dick Clark. Kevin M.
