Maybe for the same reason it's being called "A Late Show," not "The Late Show"? Doesn't consider it the REAL "The Late Show," worthy of being produced in the regular studio, unless they can have a full audience and all the other normal trappings?
On a related note, Andy Richter recently tweeted a photo showing Stage 15 at Warner Bros. empty, and some other "Conan" writers tweeted about having cleaned out their offices on the lot.
