I’m not so sure about this, especially because I dispute the presumption
that the Oscars have a rating problem. The Oscars telecast remains one of
the highest rated television programs of each year, and the decline in its
ratings, while significant, are roughly within the decline of ratings for
broadcast television in general over the same period.

I think the Oscars, as is, would continue to dramatically outdraw the MTV
VMAs even if all on the same platform. I also think that any plan to get
the Oscar ratings up to what they were 10 to 15 years ago with any kind of
production tweak is doomed to failure.
