I hate this. Also, they can give out a Best Kiss Oscar if they like, they are not going to get 1970s ratings for the Oscars anymore - but the Oscars even at their low ebb is one of the most viewed television programs of the year.
Try this instead: Put the 3 hour 30 minute version on network TV, where the old people who would watch it already are, and put a streamlined MTV version online, consisting of edited extended highlights and special musical performances and maybe backstage moments with cussing, for a small fee, or with ads.
