I think I heard somewhere that McHale's show was doing better than it had
been on E! but that clearly wasn't enough (and I must admit that those last
6 episodes felt like he was just phoning it in). I'm just not sure that
Netflix is suitable vehicle for really topical programming. I know there
have been discussions in this group recently about what the late night
shows do when they go dark for a few weeks, but I know that I wouldn't be
watching whatever they offered when they're not reacting to current events.
And that goes for Netflix too. Didn't the same fate befall Chelsea
Handler's Netflix show incidentally?

If they want to get into this area of TV then they almost need a "Topical"
section on the platform, and absolutely give viewers the very latest
episode of a series by default regardless of whether or not they've missed
the last few episodes.

In the end, I'm just not sure that this type of television works for
Netflix's model. Stranger Things can be watched weeks, months or years
later without problem. A talk show loses its lustre within 24 hours, and
apart from devoted fans, few are going to tune in years later to hear no
longer topical news gags.
