The segment with Daniels was as good as it could possibly be, given the
constraints. What was remarkable about it for me was how smart she came
across.

The show knew what it was doing - they used her to attract viewers (I am
not a regular viewer, and I watched it - albeit later, on Hulu), but it was
not the first interview of the night, and JK was transparent all along that
she would not be able to answer any questions.

That segment was mildly entertaining - but what was really interesting was
a segment that served as Act 2, in which JK, in her personable way, briefly
interviewed one by one about 5 or 6 confirmed MAGA anti-immigration
Trumpsters, and then invited them in to meet a DACA recipient in her early
20s, her toddler, and her fiancé who is from Kansas, a soldier, about to
leave to be stationed overseas. She explained to them what DACA actually
was (several of the MAGAs clearly did not understand it), and then JK asked
variations of “Do you really want to deport her to Mexico, a country she
never knew?” It was fascinating - no less so because, despite the implied
setup of melting the hearts of the hardline Trumpsters, none of them really
changed their mind (one of them was open to a special exception just for
this young woman). Of course the producers would have had to work pretty
hard to find that panel, since more than 80% of Americans support DACA.

Also, I would say that JK’s monologue was a sharper critique of the SOTU
speech than Colbert’s. I know we have seen that Colbert’s ratings get a
bump when he does these live shows, but he might be better served going to
CA the week he wants to do that, and then tape the show a few hours after
the big event to give himself and writers some time to polish.
