I can't applaud this the way others have for one significant reason: What
made the two moments memorable was they weren't funny. You can say they
were moving, and Chappelle's story at the end of his monologue certainly
was, but it wasn't funny. And not my usual subjective opinion about whether
the attempt at comedy worked... both moments were intentionally serious.
SNL is a sketch comedy series, but the cold open wasn't funny, and much of
Chappelle's monologue was intended to be somber and reflective.

I'd have accepted a cold open featuring an unusually contrite Lorne
Michaels, apologizing profusely for giving Trump the free airtime as host
and making jokes about a racist, sexist, sexual predator, but this wasn't a
mea culpa.

I know, I am too critical of SNL, and I'm decades outside their target
demographic. But it didn't work for me.
