As far as an sports event switching channels, i remember when ABC was
committed to the Kentucky Derby one year and the Busch race which was the
Auto Club 300 was still in progress. So ABC started their Derby pre-race
show, while ESPN carried the Busch race to its conclusion. In fact, ESPN
started showing the race a few minutes before 4:30, because they knew it
was going to run over.
There was an NHL game on NBC that had the same issue with the Preakness
too.
