Interviewing is traditionally the hardest thing for hosts to master. (Good
interviewers without comedy chops become Charlie Rose.) The reality is that
the easiest way to fill half of a show's five hours per week is interviews,
even if most interviewees have nothing to say beyond "Watch my movie and/or
TV show," and the best hosts will merely be a bit more adept at steering
those guests into and out of their two almost-entertaining stories.

Granted that even when Colbert has someone on who's capable of spontaneity,
it helps to be a fan of Tolkien. But that should improve as time passes.
