If he were at the conventions, he'd just be getting the party-approved
interviews anyway.

This is reminiscent of the post-Super Bowl live show, which didn't benefit
at all from being live. Yeah, there will be the ability to add a joke or
two that's a response to something that happened during the convention that
evening. But the conventions will once again be heavily on-message and
easily-ignored, and the Late Show will be as tightly pre-produced. They
can't leave large blocks of time open assuming there will be something
interesting to react to, so being live will still be an unsatisfying
gimmick.
