The timing seems odd to me, coming after the announcement of a new TV show and
all (that I've heard or seen nothing on it since the announcement gives me
pause, but that's a separate discussion).
I would hope CBS and company aren't stupid enough to be doing this as a
preemptive strike because the upcoming show bears some resemblance to the
Axanar project. Regardless of the validity of an IP case, it would be a blow
to fan support.
What discussion I've seen (comment threads, so hardly authoritative) seems to
think that this project, more than any other, has passed some threshold past
which it is seen as a threat to IP. I don't think it's an authenticity issue,
as there are enough fan projects with ST actors (across the various series)
that would blur the line for me.
But, of course, I am not a lawyer.

enough to convince them to sue for injunction and damages...
