Of course the career protestors will be there -- that's when the role
of a journalist being able to differentiate between a shill and
someone with a legitimate grievance comes into play. I'm certain there
are birthers and related whack-jobs outside the DNC, but I'm also sure
there is an unemployed father of four whose wife has cancer and wants
to know what happened to all the promises Obama made to him and others
like him. But they have no voice at these conventions. Nobody who will
speak for them; nobody willing to speak truth to power. If a reporter
isn't willing to ask hard questions, there is no reason for them to be
on-scene. The whole concept of what is now branded Eyewitness News was
created to get what were then only newsMEN outside of the newsroom and
actually at the source of the news they were covering. But all of that
has been minimized to standing where news WAS and providing
wraparounds like, "Back to you in the studio." If the reporters aren't
willing to do their jobs, why don't all newscasts just originate from
Atlanta -- no journalists on scene at all. Nobody needs a press box at
a convention because the press have no need to be there.
