OK... Perhaps something's up in my environemnt.
In the environment where the icons are "incorrect" (i.e. brown rather than
blue and with the strange connection mode icons) I have the following
environment variable set:

$ echo $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP
XFCE
-----
Unsetting this gives me the "blue" behaviour.
