Hopefully a final comment about this from me, with a suggestion about
how to restore the packages that you don't want from "proposed" back to
stable repository versions.

With some help from another Ubuntuforums member, 1fallen, I was given this info 
page from askubuntu

which I followed and successfully managed to get my machine back to where I 
thought it was before this surprise discovery of "proposed" being enabled.

  Accidentally I've enabled proposed updates in development section but
  now I can't disable it. I've rebooted the laptop but the issue isn't
