Do you have any examples for music players that recognise
<album_title>.<extension>? (I'm not aware of any at this point.)

The existing list of file names exists because they are widely used by
various players, so we are just following established precedent here. We
can look at supporting this, but I'd prefer to do this only if there are
popular music players that already support this. If not, I don't think
we'd be doing the world a favour by adding yet another file name
convention to the already messy situation.

Title:
  Recognize album artwork with "Album title.supported_extension"
  filename

Status in Ubuntu Music App:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  At this time, Music currently supports the following filenames for local
album artwork (i.e. album artwork which is stored locally in the same folder as
the music for which it should be associated):
  * cover
  * album
  * albumart
  * .folder
  * folder

  These filenames must have one of the following extensions:
  * jpeg
  * jpg
  * png

  However most applications and programs also support (provided it matches the
folder name and metadata album title exactly):
  Album Title.supported_extension

  I propose that "Album Title.supported_extension" be added to the list
  of recognized filenames for album artwork, to bring Music into line
  with most other music players...
