As a "working from home" FOSS developer (though I'm freelance rather than
a remote employee of a larger company), one big attraction for a residency
at a local uni would simply be that it would get me out of the house and
interacting with real live people a bit more.  It's easy to go a bit dolally
sometimes cooped up at home.  The co-working space concept seems pretty
popular, and I suspect this is one major reason why.
