Okay, these words aren't coming out quite right, but here's a v.1.0. Patches extremely welcome.
http://teachingopensource.org/index.php/HOWTO_plan_a_POSSE#POSSE_announcement_email ------ A portfolio of recommendations from a global network of collaborators highlighting the publicly available work your students have contributed to - work done on distributed international teams on large, complex, existing projects used daily by millions of people in the real world, created by dynamic communities where self-directed learning and pursuit of passions is the norm. That's the day-to-day life of an open source contributor - coder, designer, marketer, writer, sysadmin, or otherwise. This could be your students. But how, with all the classes you have to teach, and all the classes they need to take, can you as a professor get them started? Answer: teach open source in your existing classes. POSSE (Professors' Open Source Summer Experience) is a week-long bootcamp, sponsored by Red Hat, that will immerse professors in open source projects so that they in turn can bring their students into the community. Participants spend a week of intensive participation in selected open source projects, led by professors with experience in teaching open source development, in partnership with community members who have deep experience and insight. By the end of the session, participants should have a much better understanding of the workings of open source projects, and a strong network of contacts to lean on as they begin to bring students into the open source world. More information about the program is available at http://teachingopensource.org/index.php/POSSE. Applications are now open - see http://teachingopensource.org/index.php/POSSE#Apply_to_an_upcoming_POSSE for details. Our current summer locations and dates: * June 7-11: Worcester State (Worcester, MA) * June 14-18: RIT (Rochester, NY) * Early July (likely July 5-9): CMU Silicon Valley (Mountain View, CA) * Late July (likely July 26-30): CMU (Pittsburgh, PA) POSSE itself is free; attendees pay their own travel, lodging, and expenses. If you're interested, check out the program page and send in an application - or if you have questions, join the Teaching Open Source mailing list (http://teachingopensource.org/mailman/listinfo/tos) and ask, or email po...@teachingopensource.org for more information. We hope to see you this summer! _______________________________________________ tos mailing list tos@teachingopensource.org http://teachingopensource.org/mailman/listinfo/tos
