The idea is that it only needs to work on the computer that it was checked 
out on and that the one drive only functions as a back up of that PC.
The files will also not be on-Demand, but always availible on the PC. I 
understand that OneDrive might still be a bad idea, but for now I just want 
to understand what the issue with the icons is.

OneDrive within the Explorer have been deprecated, but I see no obvious 
reason why other overlay icons would not work at all.
Does anyone have any experience with this behaviour from TortoiseSVN on 
OneDrive or know if OneDrive folders have unequivically been blocked from 
displaying overlay icons in the newest versions of Windows11 / OneDrive?
