IMO, it's pretty much expected that if a user wants support for a free
product, you're going to have to do a little work yourself.  There is other
alternatives to subscribing to a mailing list like looking through list
archives where 90% of the time someone will have already experienced the
problem and gotten feedback, especially for simple questions.

If a user can't be bothered to sign up for a mailing list for a week to get
their questions answered or searching some archives, it's unreasonable for
one person to become the "help desk" for thousands of users for even one
product.
