Hm, I remember it being required. Or at least I remember not being able
to do it without -u. But I haven't read the man page in a while, sorry.

No, you don't have to destroy your session at all. You can just detach
and run:

$ tmux -u attach

I just tried it here and it worked (or rather, didn't work without -u,
started working after reattaching with -u).

You might be right about the doc changes; I couldn't say.
